Arabic-language Internet is coming of age

"This is an example of innovation based on local culture, local understanding and local language. It's not a variation of western technologies," Haddad said. Still, he added, "you can have the smartest search engine in the world, but if you don't have content, it's useless."

Are Internet firms afraid of the Middle East?

The interesting thing about this market is that we have 400 million speakers and it's the fifth largest spoken language out there, so its a huge market -- all united by the Arab language," he said, contrasting it with the language and culture-divided European market.

It's a huge opportunity. I think we're at a tipping point, 60 million online users, 200 million mobile users -- the numbers are amazing.

Yamli, Transliterator to Search Arabic Pages
I always thought Google needed such a tool because:
  1. For some, it is much more convenient to search using the latin characters. And sometimes one is even stuck with a keyboard with arabic characters.
  2. A lot of webpages are _written_ in the transliterated form already, which is worth being indexed and found – perhaps through converting them.
  3. It would be useful for an arabic query to be searched for using BOTH forms ...

Yamli, An Immensely Useful Tool

Gladly, I found Yamli, a search website with an amazing capability. In it, I use my Latin keyboard to type things like “mou2amara”, then the magic happens: It will be automatically converted, inside the search box, to “مؤامرة ” after which I can quickly search using google’s search engine.
Gone are the days when I had to find those annoying Javascript-based Arabic Keyboards to type using my mouse. This is instantaneous gratification, great stuff.

Yamli Search is very intriguing new search engine that transliterates Arabic written in the Latin alphabet into Arabic proper, and then runs that query through Google.
